Membership
Schools & Colleges
Every club at their school level will be at liberty to decide on the amount which is supposed to be paid by students as membership subscription fee although the recommended one shall be Kshs 1,000 per year (US$ 10). This fee can vary from one institution to another on the need basis.
The club Patron will then write a letter to the National secretary general informing him of the decision and also supplying the head office with the list of members as soon as the recruitment in the first term of the year is concluded.
The secretary general at the headquarters will then respond in liaison with the National patron by supplying the annual schedule of the mediation club activities to the school, this will enable the club to have a clear focus on what they need to put in place in order to enable members to participate effectively on the annual event. Some of the annual events may include inter class mediation competition, voting the most disciplined class of the year and giving trophy to the winning class.
Why Peer Mediation in Schools?
Unresolved conflicts, verbal or physical aggression can significantly worsen the atmosphere in a class, often; a quarrel during a break which has not been resolved distracts the attention of the affected students in a class. Another “classic” situation; the teacher observes a fight between two students intervenes but does not have the time to pacify it because the school bell rings. All of these cases can lead to frustration and anger or a continuation of the quarrel during the next break and after the school. Teachers often feel frustrated because of the missing time to thoroughly deal with the problem.
In order to establish and support a constructive conflict resolution approach in schools it is advantageous to get students actively involved and experience the enhancement of their skills, so, there can be a mutual benefit for both teachers and students as listed below
- students learn how to improve their competencies in conflict resolution and empathy
- teachers are relieved in their daily tasks
- solutions which have been developed by the quarreling parties themselves are more likely to be successful than a decision of a teacher;
- students are empowered to take care of their own problems with the help of the peers
- Improvement in academic performance due to teachers having more focus in addressing academic matters instead of focusing on disciplinary issues
Coordinators
The club will recruit coordinators who should be a professionally trained mediator certified by a credible mediation training institution, The work of the coordinator will be to promote the club to various schools or institutions and assist implementing the club in the same territory. Coordinators will be tasked with the responsibility to ensure the smooth communication between the institutions in his/her territory with the club head office, also the coordinators’ role will be to supply the centers under his/her jurisdiction with the necessary materials required by the club.
